Scenario
Jane
is responsible for a large number of Tourism and Hospitality Trainees over
a wide geographic area which includes remote island resort locations. Many
of these trainees have workplace mentors who assist with the "on-site"
aspects of the student's training and assessment. Jane has a site within
the TAFE Institute's Learning Management System which provides the learning
plans, learning materials, tracking etc. students need to undertake their
courses. She also provides an information "hub" with links to
interesting web sites, current industry information, jobs etc.
But ... Jane wants something more. Her ability to personally visit or contact these trainees and mentors is limited, as is their opportunity to interact with each other. She also wants to provide students with up to date industry news and with a wider range of resources than is currently available to them, but with hundreds of trainees plus internal teaching commitments she simply does not have the time to do all of the research necessary to do this effectively. She would also like an engaging, non-threatening way for students to keep their own personal training diary, used for assessment, which they may or may not like to share with other students, and she would like a place for the mentors to interact with each other outside the formal learning environment.
Jane recently attended an EdNA training session on embedding online resources and services into her own web pages. She has also been reading about the use of RSS in e-learning. She decides that during the next term break she will explore these technologies.
